Accessibility

EqualWeb focuses on enhancing digital accessibility by creating web experiences that are usable and welcoming for people with a range of disabilities. The aim is to allow all users to access information and engage with content independently, efficiently, and confidently. This mission involves continuous refinement of online usability while adhering to internationally recognized accessibility standards. As part of this effort, the NEEDOH website underwent an extensive review and improvement process carried out by skilled engineers and accessibility specialists. The main goal was to bring the website in line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level, a widely recognized benchmark for inclusive and accessible web design.

These guidelines are designed to accommodate the various ways that users interact with digital content, especially those who rely on assistive technologies or alternative input methods. They address critical aspects such as site structure, navigation, readability, visual presentation, and the responsiveness of interactive elements. Implementing these standards has made the website more navigable and intuitive for users with diverse needs. This includes people who are blind or have low vision, those with hearing impairments, individuals with learning or cognitive challenges, users with limited mobility or speech impairments, those with light sensitivities, and users managing multiple accessibility needs. Enhancements that follow these guidelines also improve the experience for all visitors by creating a clearer, more user-friendly interface.

The accessibility upgrade combined automated testing with detailed manual evaluation. Automated tools helped detect technical issues efficiently, while manual assessments allowed specialists to observe real user interactions and ensure meaningful improvements. All content, including both existing and newly added material, was reviewed to guarantee a consistent, accessible experience. Identified barriers were addressed through targeted updates to site structure, navigation, and interactive functionality. Technical improvements involved adjustments to JavaScript and CSS, as well as optimization for compatibility with assistive technologies like screen readers, including NVDA and JAWS.

Cross-platform performance was another priority. The website was refined to function reliably on major browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari. Particular attention was paid to ensuring accessibility tools like macOS VoiceOver work consistently, providing dependable functionality regardless of the user’s operating system or device. Screen reader support was carefully tested on both Windows and Mac platforms to ensure smooth navigation, accurate content reading, and intuitive interaction.

Several accessibility features have been implemented to support diverse user needs. Full keyboard navigation enables users who cannot use a mouse to move through the site efficiently. Flashing or blinking elements were minimized to reduce discomfort. Images are accompanied by descriptive text, and users can adjust font size, spacing, and alignment to improve readability. Additional options include alternative fonts, enhanced color contrast, and display modes such as light, dark, or monochrome to accommodate different visual sensitivities.

Other usability enhancements include adjustable cursor size and color for visibility, the ability to zoom content up to 200 percent without loss of functionality, and tools to highlight links or headings. Features like image descriptions, tooltips, and text emphasis offer additional clarity, while simplified viewing modes and support for alternative input methods provide further flexibility.

Technically, the website’s accessibility relies on standard web technologies including HTML, WAI-ARIA attributes, CSS, and JavaScript. These elements collectively ensure compliance with accessibility standards while remaining compatible with modern browsers and assistive devices. Through these comprehensive and ongoing improvements, the NEEDOH website demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusivity, usability, and respect for the varied ways users engage with online content.
